Smart Mobility and Energy - How to manage your E-Mobility Infrastructure?

With fast changing global trends in mobility and a gradual change from internal combustion engines and fossil fuels to zero emission plug in hybrid electric vehicles and finally to battery electric vehicles together with the rise of renewable power sources like wind and solar power, the market for electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging points is growing, which is directly driving the need for remote control and management of the charging points, and charging management for the end users of the charging stations. GDi Ensemble for Smart Mobility and Energy enables these scenarios by providing the key benefits of combining all systems and stakeholders into a single sustainable ecosystem. As companies and individuals who were never involved in mobility, charging or energy business are becoming stakeholders in the emerging electric mobility market, the know-how that is required to successfully run and manage the business is missing, and the opportunity to provide turnkey SaaS solution would enable any company or individual to get involved into the electric vehicle charging business, operating the IoT infrastructure by utilizing the open source distributed systems platform and microservice architecture through service fabric cluster. Managing EV charging infrastructure in real-time requires high availability from the backend systems as any service degradation has a potential to cause charging point malfunction or a bad state that can require an on-field assistance. The issue is further emphasized by considering the development and maturity state of the communication protocol and different implementations from different charging station vendors. Apart from requiring a backend system with zero downtime, the requirements also include horizontal scalability, enabling easy and simple charger network expansion, seamless upgrade of microservices and low infrastructure maintenance requirements. Microsoft Service Fabric cluster running on Azure proved to be a perfect fit for the multi-tenant application with a single multi-tenant database providing application tenants the possibility not only to have their own charging stations in the system, but also to have the second tenant level and multiple charging operators operating their own charging points (IoT devices) under the same system.

Igor is a product and solution manager in GDi, responsible for business and solution development of products in area of smart mobility and energy, remote control and management of EV charging infrastructure, battery storage systems and renewable energy systems. Graduated on University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in information and communication technology, has experience both in telecom and energy industries working on fiber optic access networks and energy systems including smart grid and E-Mobility solutions.
